Now the beauty and the horror are yours, to have and to hold and to live. You fought with courage and cleverness and took yourself home. On the last day, you smashed your way through the beautiful things and ran, not noticing as you bled or feeling as you cried. But the beautiful things were oh so sharp, and they laughed when you bled. They promised you a place at their side, and meaning in your life, and they surrounded you with beautiful things. 2.9 Chapter Seven: Tales Around the Fireįrom the Onyx Path catalogue: Once upon a time, they took you from your home.2.8 Chapter Six: All the Kingdoms of the Earth.2.4 Chapter Two: More Thing in Heaven and Earth.2.3 Chapter One: The Face in the Mirror.Keep in mind, this is my personal view, which may be unsupported by canon. Spirits, while incredibly alien, at least have an appreciable intelligence (to a certain extent) the Contract concepts are visible, but aren't really understanding in what they do or possibly even are, and only make themselves known in their representations in the world. The Contract is with an aspect of reality itself that isn't truly sentient on a level mortals can truly comprehend.

Platonic Form) that you can negotiate with. Rather, those embodiments allow the manifestation of a pure concept (i.e. There doesn't have to be a spirit of Dog to get a Fang and Talon Contract, or a spirit of beauty for a Vainglory Contract they can find embodiments of those concepts in the real world as part of forging the Contract, of course (see the all too brief mention of the process in Rites of Spring), but ultimately their Contract isn't filtered through those embodiments. Now, there are a list of "common gifts" that werewolves can get, but theoretically, if they were to hunt down a spirit that was a hybrid of some sort, they could potentially negotiate for a new set of gifts based on those combined concepts.Ĭonversely, a Changeling isn't dealing with spirits themselves, but rather directly with the concepts in question. They bargain with them or hunt them down, and get gifts. Werewolves get their Gifts from spirits themselves. Taking it one level further, though, does give a bit more meat to it. It would, to a certain extent, make sense - they represent powers from different wellsprings.īut, while it makes senses, it hardly is satisfying on its own. It's easy to say that the different realms give up different types of powers - that a Werewolf cannot get a Gift from Arcadia, and a Changeling cannot forge a pact with anything from Shadow. I'm aware that the 2nd edition of WtF was recently released, but I haven't read through it yet - so I don't know how it changes things up, and I don't know what they have planned for the upcoming Changeling 2nd edition.īack on topic: This has been a big issue for me. heh, I'm not really sure how I'd put it.Īnyway, I wanted your guys' thoughts on all of this. Like, I'd imagine one splat is basically drawing favors from spirits, while the other is. As in, you draw on your contract/gift to affect the subject of that aspect of reality. Mechanically, they seem to work out fairly similarly. It's questionable whether they'd have the ability to bargain with lesser spirits in the ways that werewolves do. It's just that changelings never "meet" the spirits that granted the power in the first place, and they don't have a frame of reference for the lesser spirits that walk the world. On the other hand, you could say that the "aspects of reality" from which changelings draw power are, in fact, spirits. On one hand, you can dismiss it out of hand, because nothing says you need to use the two game lines together. I guess what throws me off is that I'm unclear on the difference between spirits and the "aspects of reality". Werewolves, by contrast, individually receive gifts from spirits as rewards for their deeds. I've been pondering the difference between the contracts of Changelings and the gifts of Werewolves, and I'd like your guys' thoughts on them.Īs I understand it, changelings are invoking clauses in contracts that were made with aspects of reality long ago.
